Time Machine - Troubleshooting

C6. "The backup volume is read only."

There are a couple of possible fixes for this:

  1. If your backups are on an external HD, eject and disconnect the drive (and its power supply, if it has a separate one) for a few moments, then restart it.  Restart your Mac, then reconnect the drive.

  2. If that doesn’t help, your Time Machine backups are probably corrupted.   Repair them per item #A5.

This may be a sign of the disk beginning to fail.  If these are your only backups, it would be prudent to get another as soon as possible, as it may fail at any moment, taking your backups with it.
